This place is on Willie Mullenaxe road right off of Green Bank road in Pocahontas County W.V. It is on top of a beautiful breezy mountain, with the old battle field on both sides of the dirt road. There is a nice pull off spot with a very large picnic table which is peaceful to eat at. They're are old piles of stone in the field which allow you to visualize where the dwellings were in which the Confederate soldiers stayed. Facing the battlefield from the pull off spot, there is a Confederate soldiers grave in the wooded area to your left . It's a battlefield that is not talked about much in history books, etc, but it is a beautiful peace of our American history and a must for any Civil War enthusiasts!
The views of the Alleghany Front from the battlefield site are preternaturally beautiful. The discreet signage on the site itself does some small justice for the soldiers who had to spend a winter perched on top of one of the most foreboding mountains for a few hundred miles in any direction, during one of the worst winters on record, without enough supplies, and no real reason for being there except that the enemy didn't suffer frostbite on that land.
It's a rare, beautiful, profound place. I hope it still is in a few years. There are plans on the drawing board for a massive wind farm right downrange from the site that'll destroy the sanctity of the battlefield site if it's built. Get here while you can!
Access road to site is in very poor condition. Signage riddled with bullet holes. Battlefield area not accessible due to barbed wire.
